Comment Wall

Hye guys! My name is Patrick Schaefer and I am a fifth year senior here at OU, about to graduate here in May. My major is marketing and I plan on going into real estate after I graduate, as I work for a property management company at the moment! I look forward to meeting everyone throughout the semester and reading/critiquing some of you guys' work. Please feel free to comment on anything you want to as far as my writing or anything on my blog really. I would also greatly accept any thoughts/recommendations for any of my blog posts. Thanks! Here is one of my favorite pictures of the University...

This is one of my favorite songs/music videos of all time. Michael Jackson seemed incredible and it is sad all our generation has to go on is music videos instead of being able to see him live. I respect him not only for his ability to write but his unbelievable dancing talent.

  1. WOW! I really enjoyed your introduction. I liked how you set it up as a weekly series. I wasn't real clear if this was supposed to be like a campus newspaper or something of that sort or if it is a more of a book. Either way, I like the idea and definitely will be coming back to see how it works out. It is different from any style that I have read so far. I have heard of Beowolf, but I know nothing about it. I have not heard of any of the other characters. I am excited to learn about them. I liked how you have each week planned out and outlined for your readers. It gives us something to look forward to. Your outline seems to cover all the major points and flows nicely from one week to another. I really look forward to seeing how your story progresses.

  2. Hi Patrick! I really enjoyed reading your introduction for your storybook. I personally don't really know anything about beowulf, so I am very excited to read all of your stories! I think you did a great job of pulling your readers, and and getting them excited to see what your stories will be! I also liked how you gave a preview of what each story will include so that your readers know what to expect, and what characters will be included. It was different that you did it from the OU daily’s perspective, and I cannot wait to see how you incorporate the competition throughout your stories. I’m curious to see if there will be some actual trivia questions to answer or an actual winner to your games! That would be really cool, and definitely unique to your project! It would also be interesting if you did each story from a different writer at the OU Daily, or something of the sort! Good Luck with everything!

  3. Hey Patrick,

I really liked getting to sit down and read your introduction for your storybook. I have heard of Beowulf, but never got into it, so I do not know much about this subject. I am very intrigued to read all of your stories in your storybook. Your introduction did a great job of grabbing my attention and getting me prepared about what your stories will be about. It was nice to see a preview of each story, it was like seeing the trailer for movie. It did a great job of setting up the story. I thought it was very creative and different that you did this through the point of view of OU Daily, it gives it a more modernized feel. I am ready to see how you tie in the competition throughout your storybook with all of your stories. Anyways, good luck with the rest of your storybook!

  4. Patrick,
First I must say I really admire the picture you chose for your comment wall, that is a great picture of the OU library. When looking at your blog, it almost makes me want to remove my background image and make it a solid fading color like yours; this not only keeps it simple, but also keeps the attention of the reader on solely the posts being made.

  5. Hey Patrick! I like the way you have your labels across the top of the page. I think it gives the reader easier access to your stories!

  8. I agree with you that Michael Jackson is extremely talented. I'm sad that we won't be able to hear any new music from him but his originals will always be classics. I liked that you included a classic music video and song on your comment wall. You can't go wrong with Michael Jackson. He is really iconic even for our generation.

  9. Hey Patrick,

I am glad that you uploaded a music video my Michael Jackson. He is such a classic musician and dancer. Thriller is a great song but also an awesome music video. Most music videos are mediocre, but this one is great. It is sad that we won’t be able to see any of his new music or videos. Thanks for sharing!

  10. Wow good choice with a Michael Jackson classic! I agree that its sad that our generation didn't get to experience any more of him than just the songs he left behind. Thriller is one of my favorites, each year at the last football game of the semester the senior class would perform Thriller on the field; its one of my favorite memories now!

  11. I really liked your music video. I know it's weird but I hadn't seen any of the Michael Jackson music videos until after he had died. I love Thriller though and I always enjoyed the fact that Michael Jackson put a note that he wasn't into the occult in the original video. I always found that amusing.

  12. Michael Jackson is a legend. Period. In my opinion, this is one of the best music videos of all time! Michael Jackson could do anything and it would be incredible. Everything about this song and video is iconic. When I watch or listen to something from MJ, I am reminded of what an incredible performer we lost. Thank you for sharing this with the class!

  13. Michael Jackson, Awesome! I'm showing my age here, but I remember when Thriller first came out when I was in 6th grade. I loved it then, and I still do. I can remember a time when I knew all of the moves. Have you ever watched 13 Going on 30? They dance to Thriller in that movie. Hope you are having a great semester.

  14. I like your choice for the music video a lot! Michael Jackson is definitely an incredible dancer and artist. It would be awesome if we could go and see him live, I bet it would be an incredible concert. I wish the media hadn't made him out to be such a villain before he passed away. I feel like he was not a bad guy like they made him out to be. The picture of the library is a really cool too!

  15. One of my favorite video of all time. This is a classic pick you have chosen for your music video; great decision! Michael Jackson has so many great songs, but this one with the music video is definitely at least in the top 3!

  16. Hi Patrick,

You chose an excellent video and song to post to your blog. Michael Jackson is one of the all time greatest artist. He made such a big contribution to the music world. This video is definitely one of the best. It brought video making up to a different level. Thanks for sharing and have a good rest of the semester!

  17. Hi Patrick, I liked your idea of having an interview with Beowulf. It is a good idea to have it set in the modern world too. Having the outlines for the different days is also a good way to show readers what to expect throughout the project. The part about the trivia, the prize, and having the product on sale at the bookstore made it seem even more real. I like that actual Beowulf himself mentions the movie, since it is kind of like a breaking the fourth wall scenario. Having it done by OU Daily is a great way to have more "audience interaction" with the student body being able to "participate" in the trivia to win that week long stay in Cabo (all expenses paid, which sounds amazing, by the way). I have only ever seen the movie, which in my opinion, was not the best, so this is a great way to learn more about him!

  18. Hey Patrick! I have heard of Beowulf but never really understood the story completely in detail. I think the idea of interviewing Beowulf really changes the reader's perspective on what is going on! The dialogue back and forth in the interview was easy to follow and everything I ever once read about Beowulf suddenly made sense to me! I also loved how instead of using a general news station, magazine, or TV show, you chose the OU Daily. I think it makes the story more personal for students at OU and makes a great connection for the class. I am a student in Gaylord college so when I saw the blurb about this story in your storybook, I became interested immediately! I also liked your choice of pictures in your storybook! They really paint a perfect picture of Beowulf in my head. Can’t wait to see how your storybook progresses the rest of the semester!

  19. Hello there, young gent!

So I just read the first part of your beowulf story, and I love it! I like how you first gave a description of what your goal is throughout your 4 part series to discuss beowulf. I actually don't know much about Beowulf, besides the name. I also enjoyed your tone in this interview, it was very realistic and personable and made me feel as though I was there in the interview with you two. I like how you gave a little tease about Gretchen so that the reader knew to expect her appearance in the future, but you drew back on saying too much. I really felt as though this was really a conversation between two different people. Great job! For someone who doesn't know much about this character, I am already starting to feel as though I know a little more and more. OU Daily might just have to recruit you before you graduate in May! You used legitimate interview questions and great style!

  20. I like how you choose to do an interview format for Beowulf. It's a great way to give your readers the whole inside scoop on Beowulf. Also very helpful to though who do not know anything about him. I also really like how you laced the authors note at the beginning of the story, opposed to at the end. It lets the reader know what was original and what you created.

In your storybook I ended up reading part 1, Beowulf before the introduction. Is it meant to be in that order? I was a bit confused, I didn't think it was supposed to be in that order.
I think that you layout of your story book is turning out well. I look forward to keeping up with it. I think that the dates really makes it feel alive. It add to the theme. If there was a way you could actually voice record this it would be awesome!

  21. Hey Patrick. I'm back again, this time to comment about your Storybook! I was interested in Beowulf because I remember reading this in highschool and enjoying it but not quite remembering all of the details. I really liked how you tied it in with OU because it makes it feel more personal and relatable that way. The OU Daily idea is really unique and I liked your introduction because it was true to how OU daily would interview. It was a super great idea to introduce Grendel in your first story but keep it a secret. It makes me curious and now I'll probably have to come back to see what the story is all about. Now I am starting to remember what Beowulf was about and I think it's a great read for everyone. You found a fun way to introduce Beowulf to your readers. Your author's note was also very informative and clear to me. Nice work!

  22. How cool that you chose to do your storybook about Beowulf. I feel like the name of Beowulf is familiar to us all, and yet I honestly have no clue who he is or why hes important... That's why I was so excited to read your story. I enjoyed the introduction and thought it set a really good scene for us readers. I appreciate the in depth preview of what was to come in the next four parts and also how you wrote it in a style that was trying to entice students to read. P.S. count me in for the free trip to Cabo; if the daily really did that I might actually read it. haha. Okay so I totally didn't get that it wasn't really Beowulf talking to the daily but instead his ghost?... did I miss that in the intro or should you go back and add something about that to minimize confusion? Anyway, I enjoyed this first story and getting to know Beowulf a little bit. His character seems like he enjoys sharing what happened in the past and that he is really proud of his battles and becoming king of the Geats. I am really interested to see the next story about Grendel. You mentioned the picture in your authors note and I want to say thanks for picking images that let us see what Beowulf looked like in his prime with all his emotions in play.

  23. Hey Patrick!

I’m glad that you chose to write about Beowulf, because it’s a story I’ve heard about many times, but never actually heard! I still hope to read the original story some time.

I would like to point out right now how sad it is that the whole time I’ve heard people mention Beowulf, I’ve pictured a story about a werewolf. (Yes, please laugh at me.) But again, I’ve never read it, and when I plan to read something, I try hard not to know anything about it beforehand because I never want to spoil anything! And thus…I thought Beowulf was…well, a wolf. Just a little bit.

One thing I would suggest is that you mention this is going to be a story told from the perspective of Beowulf’s ghost from the beginning. I read the whole intro picturing Beowulf on campus, but then his first line in the first story was, “Here I am, Beowulf’s ghost,” and that kind of threw me off a bit. Again, I know nothing about the story, so maybe it’s common knowledge that he dies or something…but again, might be worth mentioning at least once in the intro.

I think the interview format is a neat idea, and the fact that you set it on OU’s campus makes it more personal! I do feel like you could get a little more out of your questions and answers though. I got a vague idea of Beowulf, but it might be interesting for him to tell a little bit about a specific battle he was in, or why he felt so strongly about fighting for his country.

  24. Hello, Patrick! I think you picked a great topic. I am not familiar with most of the reading for this class, but I know who Beowulf is for sure. I am really excited to read about your storybook because I think Beowulf is the great character to talk about. I like the front page of yours, because I can see who Beowulf is already. He is the one that fought against Gremlin! That is just a great picture! I like how you wrote your introduction. I think that is my favorite part of your storybook. You already planned what kind of story you are going to add up to your story and you gave us when you are going to post them also. That is clean and well-organized. I like how you separate your storybook into four parts as well. I think those parts are important for the story of Beowulf for sure. That was a great story you wrote about Beowulf! I thnk you did a great job !

  25. This is the first time I read your storybook. I like the idea of an interview though. I like the fact that you clearly outlined how the “articles” are set up in the introduction. I also love that you put an ad in your introduction. I love the little details you added, even including a twitter hashtag. I didn’t like the movie about Beowulf so I was looking forward to your story. One thing I really wish you had done was elaborate on not only why Beowulf told the story but also why he chose the Norman Daily in order to tell his story. I really liked the interview though and it’s an interesting topic. I look forward to your next sections particularly because I like the tone of your writing. I also really like the idea of an interview. Telling the story from a first person is always enjoyable for me.

  26. Great Storybook! I have heard the name Beowulf before, but I don't think I even knew anything about him, so all of this is brand new information. I also like the approach with the four part series in the OU Daily and the grand prize. Im sure people would read it even if there wasn't the opportunity to go to Cabo because it really is captivation. I normally stay away from blood and guts and gore, and it kind of made me cringe to read, but I do want to come back and rad about Grendel's mother. After seeing that picture of its arm teared off I can only imagine the thing that gave birth to Grendel. Keep it up and Ill check back in after your all done!

  27. Hi Patrick!
I liked the beginning of your introduction! I work for OU Nightly so, for me, I thought it was neat how you added the bit about OU Daily. It made your storybook introduction standout and real. Also, including the interviewing part and the setup tied in perfectly with the media style format.
I also liked the way you introduced the stories that you will be telling in your storybook. It was new and different. It made me extremely curious to know what you were going to write.
Your first story was really fun! I liked that it was set up exactly like an interview, which did not let me down after reading your introduction. Plus, the format was easy to read which is something I always look for when I read other's stories.
I enjoyed the fact that your writing was written like every day speech but still told an ancient story. This combination worked really well!
I am excited to read the rest of your storybook! Great job!

  28. Hello Patrick!
I really like your storybooks up with it being an interview with Beowulf! Wouldn't it be so cool if we could really sit down and talk to all these mythological characters about their adventures and battles. It seems so much cooler and descriptive if it comes from a first person storyteller, because they knew exactly what it was like! There would be so many heroes out there I would love to interview! Your story about Grendel was so cool! I had no idea! Are you in Gaylord college? If not you should be! The image you chose was no my favorite to look at haha but really did depict the story well. Grendel looks so scary and evil and the arm ripped off just gives me the chills! You did an amazing job and I can't wait to read about Grendels mother! Keep up the good work!

  29. Hey Patrick! I was a marketing major for a while too, so I know quite a bit about that degree path. It is really interesting work, and I hope you are able to find success with that degree in real estate! I am sure you will be able to, especially since you are already in with a property management group.

I really enjoyed your storybook about Beowulf! What a neat way to write your storybook, as an interview format. It lets the reader learn about the characters in a new way, and makes for a very interesting read. It also allows you to develop the characters in ways that you might not have been able to do before, which is obvious in your character development! The imagery and layout that you chose for your storybook are also great, imagery is so important in stories and that is not lost with you. Thanks for sharing and I hope your finals go okay!
